How to recognize debit & credit card fraud

What are debit and credit card fraud? Well, if you have a debit or credit card, you’ve probably experienced some type of fraud and were required to get a replacement card. Generally, the bank or the merchant absorb the card fraud losses, and the bad guy pockets the proceeds. Examples of debit and credit card fraud include someone stealing your card data by placing skimming devices on gas pumps, point-of-sale terminals and ATMs or obtaining your card information from websites or through data breaches of businesses you may have utilized – such as hotels, restaurants, stores, etc. Your stolen information is often packaged with other stolen card data and sold on the “dark web” for others to purchase. Fraudsters will use your stolen card information to create counterfeit cards or make large-dollar online purchases.

How to avoid being victimized by debit or credit card fraud

Debit and credit card fraudsters will go to great lengths to steal your money. There are, however, some simple and very effective ways to protect against becoming a victim.

  1. Always “dip the chip” instead of “swipe the stripe.”Avoid swiping your card at any point-of-sale terminal you use.

  2. Keep your debit & credit cards with you.Always safely secure your cards in your wallet or purse.

  3. Be wary when shopping online.Don’t allow websites to “remember” your card number. Verify the site’s security, and make sure the URL is authentic before using your card online.

  4. Make sure the bank always has your current phone, email and address on file.Keep your information updated in case of a move or job change.

And if you think you've been a victim of a card-related scam, calling the number on the back of the card is the best method to report or ask about fraud.
